Start with the "why" in mind. This is how great leaders inspire us. But what does that even mean? Start with the "why" in mind?
Simon Sinek describes his Golden Circle like this; we know our "what" (what I'm doing) and we know our "how" (how do I do it), but often times we don't know our "why" (why am I doing this?)
When it comes to fitness I would say most of us exercise because Dr. Oz said to be healthier, we should exercise. Or maybe our doctor recommended that we exercise to lower our blood pressure or blood sugar or cholesterol - all excellent reasons- but is that enough to truly inspire us to do something we don't actually want to do?
For most of us, the answer is no- it's not.
I have a close friend who just got diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. To say she was bummed is an understatement. Now my friend has never been a big fan of exercise- especially cardio. She fights it tooth and nail! But as she was researching effective methods for managing RA, regular cardiovascualr exercise was at the top of every list.
After about 2 weeks of being down in the dumps (and who blames her, right?) she was sick of feeling sorry for herself. So she started to figure out A) what she could do B) how she was going to do it.
She had her "AH HAH" BIG light bulb moment- she found her "why". She found the purpose behind doing cardiovascular exercise- it makes her feel better.
This is why we start with why. How do you want to feel? What can you do to feel that way? Let's do that- that's your why.
Our why is our purpose- why are we working in our chosen career, or why are we selling what we sell. Steve Jobs mission statement was never to make great phones. Instead it was this;
"To make a contribution to the world by making tools for the mind that advance humankind."
As the coach and leader of EZ Fit in 10 I know my what and my how- I should at this point, right? I've been doing this long enough that I should be able to lead safe and effective workouts in my sleep. At this point I feel like everyone knows me and trusts me as an instructor, but do you know my "why" behind EZ Fit in 10?
To help you find your why, here's mine.
"To help people feel better by moving more, 10 minutes at a time" ~Sue at EZ Fit in 10
When we feel better, we do better. I believe that if everyone had just a little more energy and a little less pain, the world would be a better place. I believe that exercise gives us a little more energy, and a little less pain. Good stuff.
I believe in the power of exercise. I believe that exercise helps us be our best selves. A 10 minute walk clears our minds, boosts our moods, increases our focus and productivity; the list of the benefits from just 10 minutes of exercise is practically endless. That list is almost as long as the number of people who don't move at all- who sit at their desks all day, then sit on their couches all night. Why? If we know that 10 minutes of exercise will lower our blood pressure, increase muscle and bone density, lower insulin and blood sugars, why won't we do it?
We don't know our why. We know what we should do- move everyday. Many of us even know how to do this- go for a walk, ride that stationary bike that's sitting in the spare room, grab those resistance bands- do something- anything! But we don't. We continue to put it off, saying to ourselves "I'll do it after work", or "I'll get started again when I can go back to the gym". We keep saying this to ourselves, day after day, week after week, month after month, until we finally realize we haven't moved- really moved our bodies- in years. Now we feel it's too late- what's the point? We've forgotten how a walk in the sunshine made us smile, or how we used to laugh while trying to dance at a wedding. Remember how you felt after a day at an amusement park? Falling into bed exhausted after a day of experiencing the waves of adrenaline from the roller coasters, your feet aching from walking from ride to ride.
For the first time in modern history we are a society of people who's minds are over-worked and our bodies are under-worked. We fall into bed exhausted from starring at screens, not from working in the fields.
My why at EZ Fit in 10 is to change our beliefs about exercise. Let's move away from this "all or nothing" belief that we can only exercise if we have the time, or can go to the gym, or if we can find something we're good at. Here's the deal- you're never going to have enough time, you don't like the gym, and you're not Serena Williams. It's time to let go of those beliefs and create new ones.
The "why" behind EZ Fit in 10 is this: We can exercise for 10 minutes. We don't need to be the best- we don't even need to be "good" at it- we just need to do it. You don't even need to figure out what to do or how to do it- I'm the coach- that's my job. You just need to show up with your "why".
