I watched the first few minutes of Eat, Pray, Love last night and was reminded of this quick little parable:
“There's a wonderful old Italian joke about a poor man who goes to church every day and prays before the statue of a great saint, begging, "Dear saint-please, please, please...give me the grace to win the lottery." This lament goes on for months. Finally the exasperated statue comes to life, looks down at the begging man and says in weary disgust, "My son-please, please, please...buy a ticket."
If You Want to Win the Healthy Lifestyle Lottery, You Have to Buy a Ticket
We want to be as healthy as possible. We want to have the energy to do the things we love to do. We want to feel rested from a good night’s sleep. We want to enjoy our lives. Well my friends, you’ve got to buy the ticket.
I wish I could wave my magic fitness fairy wand and grant you vitality, longevity, energy, strength- all the feels that make getting up in the morning a whole easier. Unfortunately even I don’t have that kind of magic.
I do know how to get all that the old fashioned way; change the way you do things.
As a health and fitness coach there are 4 pillars of health that I help people with:
Now there are other areas that influence our health. How we manage our emotional health, what medications we take, and hormonal health. Those areas are handled by doctors and therapists and are outside my wheel house. I help people adopt healthy behaviors like exercising, making informed nutrition choices, building better sleep habits, and adopting healthy recovery behaviors.
That's a real fancy way of saying I help people adopt healthy habits.
When you buy your "healthy life" lottery ticket, that's what you're getting. You're learning how to take care of your body in a way that kind of feels like magic...
"Once upon a time, there was an old woman who lived in a shoe. She had so many children, she didn't know what to do. Then all the children grew up and moved out. She had spent so many years taking care of everybody else that she forgot how to take care of herself.
One afternoon as she sat by her window looking out from her shoe, she noticed the trees had changed color. Something inside her stirred. A memory from long ago of walking through the woods on a crisp fall day. She grabbed coat, put her shoes on, and headed out the door.
As she walked through her neighborhood she began to notice the deep reds and yellows of the changing trees. The crisp autumn air started to lift the fog that seemed to always weigh her down every afternoon. She took a deep breath in...then out...her steps becoming purposeful and strong...."
If we want to win the healthy life lottery, we have to do the stuff- behaviors- that gets us healthy.
Begin at the beginning. Here are 4 "healthy life" steps you can take- one for each area:
1. How we move
Start with a 10 minute walk everyday for 2 weeks to build the habit of moving everyday.
2. How we eat
Start with drinking a glass of warm water with lemon every morning for 2 weeks to help promote hydration and detox the liver.
3. How we sleep
Set a bed time you can be consistent with. 1 hour before turn off (or put away) your phone, tablet, etc so you begin to reduce your "blue screen" time (it's designed to stimulate you). try it for 2 weeks.
4. How we recover
Set aside a time that you can be consistent with- like right after lunch or before bed- and breath for 1 minute. Close your eyes and take deep, full inhales and exhales for 1 minute. Try it for 2 weeks.
Now that's a lot of new behaviors at one time. Pick one.
Remember, in order to win the lottery, we've got to buy a ticket. We buy 1 ticket at a time, and every 2 weeks we buy another ticket. Think of every ticket as a $10 winner- win enough times and before you know it, you've made a small fortune!
